  • Data collection disk space usage

The following guidelines for maintaining a reasonable amount of free disk space for trouble-free data collection have been established:

    Rule Number 1:

Users shall remove files within 2 weeks of collecting data.

    Supplementary rules

    1. Only raw data (and related files, such as for auto-indexing, strategy determination etc.) may be put on the disks of denali, tick and flea. Data processing shall be done elsewhere, such as on /nfs/groucho/scratch.
    2. An automatic script runs every week to remind you (and me and your boss) of your delinquency.
    3. I may remind you via e-mail before deleting any raw data files older than 2 weeks, but it is much safer if you delete them yourself because then you will know that they have been backed up.
    4. You shall collect data in a sub-directory under the username you use on groucho as listed in the user database. Visitors shall use a subdirectory under the username of the person hosting them.
    5. Files that are not under an identifiable username will be deleted by me after 2 weeks since I will obviously not know who to contact. Files collected under someone else's username are also liable to disappear without warning after 2 weeks. You will therefore need to take extra care when setting up data collection to be sure that the files go into an appropriate subdirectory.
    6. All users are responsible for backing up their own raw data files. I will not do that, but I am happy to help you if you have trouble with it.
    7. I WILL HELP YOU DELETE FILES IF YOU REFUSE TO COOPERATE WITH THE ABOVE RULES!

The automatic script is now in operation. Every Monday morning at 4am it checks for files older than 2 weeks and sends a message to the owner of the files listing those files and sends a summary to that user's supervisor. A second script runs several times daily and updates a "motd" that is seen every time you log in on denali, tick or flea.

If you feel that 2 weeks is too little time, remember that it is much more efficient to process data on groucho with the files present locally, such as in /nfs/groucho/scratch, than it is to do so on denali, tick or flea.

Another reminder (also to be found in the rules for signing up on the X-ray data collection queue): it would be very considerate if you would send e-mail to me and to the next user in the queue when you have finished with your data collection time. It is really easy to see who is in the queue by issuing the command queue from the raxis accounts on denali, tick or flea. You don't even have to start up netscape.

    Thanks for your cooperation.
